Why We Built a Dedicated Divorce & Financial Planning Practice within Ullmann Wealth Partners

At first glance, a wealth management firm may seem like an unlikely place to find deep expertise in divorce-related financial issues. But for us, this focus did not emerge from a marketing plan; it grew organically from real client needs and lived experience.

The story begins in 2013, when I was still practicing law. At the conclusion of many divorce cases, I routinely referred my clients to Glenn and his firm for financial guidance. These were individuals stepping into a new phase of life—often uncertain, overwhelmed, and confronting financial responsibilities they had never managed independently.

The feedback I received was remarkably consistent. Clients spoke about the confidence Glenn gave them, the education he provided, and the sense of calm that replaced their anxiety. Many told me they finally understood their finances for the first time. They had clarity around what mattered, what was possible, and what steps they needed to take to move forward. That kind of impact stays with you.

Over time, Glenn began to notice a broader pattern. Divorce was no longer a peripheral issue; it was becoming central to the conversations happening every day. Our clients were navigating divorces of their own, or helping adult children through one, or supporting parents, siblings, and close friends facing the same reality. Divorce, whether welcomed or unwanted, had become a defining financial inflection point for the families we served.

Seeing where client needs were headed and long before it became obvious, Glenn made the deliberate decision to expand the firm’s capabilities and bring me on board. The goal was simple but ambitious: to provide thoughtful, coordinated, and truly unmatched financial guidance to individuals and families facing divorce.

Over the past twelve years, we have continued to refine and deepen this practice. Most recently, we welcomed Caitlin Frederick to our team, bringing specialized expertise in business valuation issues. Many divorces involve closely held or family-owned businesses, and accurately understanding their value is often critical to achieving a fair and sustainable outcome. This additional layer of expertise allows us to serve clients with greater precision and confidence during an already complex process.

In a perfect world, we would only work with happily married clients, helping them grow and steward their wealth together. But the reality is different. Nearly half of first marriages end in divorce, and ignoring that reality does not serve our clients well. Addressing divorce thoughtfully, proactively, and intelligently is not separate from wealth management; it is an essential part of it.

Our role is not to take sides or relive the past. It is to help people regain clarity, protect what matters, and build a stable financial foundation for what comes next. If you or someone you care about is facing divorce, or seeking clarity about how it could affect their financial future, we are here to support you calmly, confidentially, and with deep respect for this moment in your life.
